This is a question that often comes up when families discover our school:
\u201c \u201cYou\u2019re an alternative school, but you follow a curriculum and teach academic subjects\u2026
<\/strong>How does that work?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

To fully understand our answer to this question, it is essential to begin by defining what is meant by alternative school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is an alternative school?<\/h4>\n

The term \u2018alternative school\u2019 actually encompasses a wide range of very different approaches.
Among the best known are, for example:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Montessori schools,<\/li>\n
  • democratic schools,<\/li>\n
  • forest schools or outdoor schools,<\/li>\n
  • or independent schools based on active learning approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Each model has its own philosophy, structure and priorities.
    There is therefore no single alternative school, but a multitude of possible forms.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Our approach: a structured framework, focused on the child\u2019s needs<\/h4>\n

    At our school, we have chosen to position ourselves as an alternative school, not in the sense of \u2018\u00e0 la carte\u2019 learning <\/strong>, as is the case in some democratic schools where pupils choose their own timetables and learning pathways, but as a different kind of learning environment, one that is both structured and deeply human.<\/p>\n

    So we decided to go for:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • a fixed timetable<\/strong>,<\/li>\n
    • the French curriculum<\/strong>, to ensure that all academic content is covered before pupils start secondary school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Why this choice?<\/h4>\n

      Quite simply because, in today\u2019s world, qualifications and educational backgrounds remain essential stepping stones.<\/strong>
      Even if one might question their limitations, they remain, today, the keys to access:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • at secondary school,<\/li>\n
      • to pursue a course of study,<\/li>\n
      • and later on, to working life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Our aim is therefore clear: to open doors for pupils, not to close them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        To this end, we believe it is essential that they have a shared academic foundation<\/strong> that is solid, recognised and transferable, particularly when they move on to a more traditional secondary school.<\/p>\n

        A local reality that needs to be taken into account<\/h4>\n

        In Mauritius, there is currently no alternative secondary education provision<\/strong> to ensure a natural progression from alternative primary schools.
        We must therefore prepare our pupils to join French-speaking or English-speaking secondary schools, which operate in a more traditional manner.<\/p>\n

        This context reinforces our decision to provide a structured and reassuring environment, whilst remaining true to our educational values.<\/p>\n

        A French curriculum\u2026 offering flexibility and respecting the child\u2019s pace<\/h4>\n

        Following the French curriculum does not mean putting constant pressure on pupils.<\/p>\n

        We base our argument on a fundamental point: the French curriculum is a spiral curriculum.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        • reviews,<\/li>\n
        • in-depth,<\/li>\n
        • consolidated
          year on year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          This structure enables us to:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • to respect each child\u2019s pace,<\/li>\n
          • to consolidate learning where necessary,<\/li>\n
          • to differentiate the work within the class group,
            without imposing a strict requirement to \u2018validate everything\u2019 at the end of each school year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            A different approach to learning: moving, experimenting, creating.<\/h4>\n

            Although academic skills are certainly present, they are not always taught in the traditional way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

            We regularly offer:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • projects,<\/li>\n
            • fun workshops,<\/li>\n
            • artistic and physical activities,<\/li>\n
            • outings and hands-on experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              For example :<\/p>\n

                \n
              • Theatre<\/strong> helps to develop oral expression, self-confidence and the ability to speak in front of a group,<\/li>\n
              • Group projects<\/strong> foster cooperation, critical thinking and independence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                These activities fully meet the learning outcomes set out in the French curriculum, but through different approaches<\/strong>, which are often more engaging and meaningful for pupils.<\/p>\n

                At the heart of our project: supporting the whole child<\/h4>\n

                Beyond knowledge and practical skills, our school places great emphasis on personal development.<\/p>\n

                We support every child in:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                • self-awareness,<\/li>\n
                • managing and expressing emotions,<\/li>\n
                • learning about consent,<\/li>\n
                • respect for oneself and others,<\/li>\n
                • listening,<\/li>\n
                • expressing needs and boundaries in a caring manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  This work is carried out:<\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • in everyday life,<\/li>\n
                  • in group life,<\/li>\n
                  • thanks to a small team that enables personalised support,<\/li>\n
                  • in an atmosphere of trust and emotional security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    We aim to create a real little community,<\/strong> almost like a family, where every child feels valued, listened to and respected.<\/p>\n

                    Educating the pupils\u2026 and the adults of tomorrow<\/h4>\n

                    Our aim is twofold: to prepare pupils to make a smooth transition to a mainstream secondary school,<\/p>\n

                    but also to give them a solid foundation to navigate today\u2019s society.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                    Learning to learn, yes.
                    But also learning to live together, to get to know one another, to respect others, to cooperate and to assert oneself in a fair manner.<\/p>\n

                    In conclusion<\/h4>\n

                    There are many different types of alternative schools.
                    The key is to:<\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • to understand what each institution means by this term,<\/li>\n
                    • and to choose a school whose educational philosophy is in line with the family\u2019s values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      This is what we at Jeanne Barret School mean by the term \u2018alternative school\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      A supportive environment, a solid educational foundation, a caring approach to teaching, and constant attention to the child in every aspect of their development.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
